1. Club name/location 

 

"Restigouche Dojo is located at 44 Salmon Blvd, Campbellton, NB E3N 3T7. Our BJJ classes are led by Maxime Raymond, a highly skilled instructor holding a Judo black belt and a BJJ purple belt. The curriculum we follow is from Rodrigo Resende BJJ Team, an established 5th-degree black belt in both Judo and BJJ. Rodrigo Resende is a student of Master Max Trombini (MXT) from Brazil, adding a rich lineage to our BJJ program.

 

 The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the fundamental techniques of BJJ. It is structured to accommodate students of all levels, from beginners looking to build their understanding of the art to advanced practitioners seeking to refine their skills. As students progress, the curriculum seamlessly incorporates more advanced techniques and strategies, ensuring a well-rounded and dynamic learning experience for all."

"Megan Raymond (Instructor):

Megan Raymond is a dedicated martial artist with a background in Judo and Wrestling. She holds a Judo black belt and a BJJ blue belt. Megan's athletic journey is marked by numerous medals and achievements in Judo, including representing Canada in international competitions. Her experience extends to Wrestling, where she earned the OFSAA Gold medal. Megan's teaching style is known for its positivity and inclusivity, creating a supportive learning environment. She also brings a unique perspective as a massage therapist specialized in sports therapy, enhancing her ability to promote physical well-being and injury prevention among her students. Megan is committed to personal growth, both on and off the mats, for her students at Restigouche Dojo.

Maxime Raymond is a highly skilled martial artist with over 15 years of experience on the provincial Judo team in New Brunswick. He's achieved a Judo black belt and a BJJ purple belt. Maxime's dedication has earned him recognition on the national stage, including awards like the President Pitney Bowes Sports NB Sports Award. He's also trained extensively in Brazil, the birthplace of BJJ, and brings a diverse martial arts background to Restigouche Dojo. Maxime is passionate about sharing his knowledge and expertise with students, providing a well-rounded approach to martial arts instruction."

3. When did you open your club?

 

"Established in 2022, Restigouche Dojo is a newcomer to the martial arts scene, dedicated to bringing the transformative power of martial arts to the community."

 

4. What made you decide to open a club/school and why did you choose your current location?

 

"The decision to open Restigouche Dojo was driven by the desire to create a hub for martial arts training, specifically focusing on Kodokan Judo and BJJ. The chosen location in Campbellton, NB, was strategic, aiming to provide convenient access for individuals in the local area."

 

5. What is the main purpose/focus for your club?

 

"Our primary mission is to spread the fundamentals of Kodokan Judo and BJJ, enhancing physical fitness, mental discipline, and personal growth. We aim to foster a community where members not only learn martial arts techniques but also develop essential life skills."

 

6. Programs available 

 

 "Our diverse range of programs accommodates various preferences and skill levels. These include Kodokan Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, self-defense workshops, kids' activities, women's self-defense, homeschool Judo/'Gym' class, and the fall prevention and safe landing workshop."

 

 

7. Gi versus no GI split on class offering? Demand changing to one or the other?

 

"While Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes at Restigouche Dojo are predominantly conducted in the traditional gi attire, the attire for other classes or workshops may vary. We recognize the importance of offering flexibility to our members and tailor our training approach to suit the specific requirements of each program."

 

8. Has your club grown or expanded since opening? Experienced versus beginner ratio?

 

"Since opening, Restigouche Dojo has experienced steady growth. The club maintains a balanced ratio of experienced practitioners and beginners, contributing to a rich and supportive learning environment."

 

9. Describe a typical BJJ class at your school.

 

"A typical BJJ class begins with a comprehensive warm-up routine to prepare the body. This is followed by technical instruction, where students learn and drill specific techniques. Controlled sparring, which allows students to apply what they've learned, is also a key component."

 

 

 

10. Do you ever host or offer seminars? If so, some past examples of participants and future events. 

 

"While Restigouche Dojo has not hosted seminars yet, we are actively in the planning process to introduce them in the near future. In the meantime, we frequently host workshops that provide valuable learning opportunities for our members and the community. These workshops cover a range of topics, including self-defense, advanced techniques, and personal growth. Our workshops are designed to be inclusive, welcoming both members and non-members, promoting the exchange of knowledge and fostering a sense of community.

 

 

11. Future plans or goals for the club?

 

"Our future goals include expanding our curriculum to offer even more specialized workshops, further engaging the community through outreach programs, and continuing to provide top-quality training in Judo and BJJ."

 

12. Advice to anyone who may be contemplating joining a BJJ club?

 

"To those considering joining Restigouche Dojo, we encourage an open mindset. Martial arts, particularly BJJ, is not solely about competition, brute strength or belt ranks. It's a journey of personal growth, mental discipline, and community bonding."

 

13. Your definition or concept as to what is or makes a "BJJ Community"

 

"Our definition of a BJJ community encompasses individuals who come together with a shared passion for martial arts. This community thrives on mutual support, respect, and a commitment to each member's growth."

 

14. Thoughts or opinion on the growth of the sport/art in Atlantic Canada? Anything you would like to see happen in the region for BJJ?

 

"We are actively contributing to the growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in New Brunswick. At Restigouche Dojo, we organize Monthly Open Mats for local practitioners, and the response has been tremendous. These events foster a sense of community and provide an opportunity for practitioners from different clubs to come together, share knowledge, and train collaboratively. We firmly believe that collaboration is key to the growth of BJJ in the region. By working together and supporting one another, all clubs and practitioners can benefit and contribute to the flourishing BJJ community in Atlantic Canada."
